Eenvolleybalnaam leeft voort………..

 Op 12 maart jongstleden is Jo Wolfgang overleden. VCSarto heeft daar op gepaste wijze aandacht aan besteed en op 30 mei toen VCSarto het 60 jarig bestaan vierde, is bekend gemaakt dat we een  Jo Wolfgang Fondshebben opgericht. Natuurlijk om de naam van Jo, die zo plotseling in Thailandoverleed, voort te laten leven, maar ook om namens Jo een gebaar te maken naarde volleybaljeugd in Tilburg.

Het initiatief voor de oprichting van het fonds isgenomen door weduwe Ans Scholten en wordt ondersteund door het bestuur van VC Sartoen oud-voorzitter Jan van den Broek.

 Voornaamste doel van het fonds zal zijn om het jeugdvolleybal in Tilburg verder teontwikkelen en financieel extra te ondersteunen. Ans Scholten zal hiertoejaarlijks een bedrag doneren. Verder doen we een beroep op grote en kleinesponsors.

Wat gaat hetFonds doen?

Een eerste activiteit is al in voorbereiding. Webieden deze zomer de jeugdteams die zich inschrijven voor het Beachtoernooi (29aug) in Zoutelande gratis vervoer per luxe touringcar aan.

Daarnaast zijn er ideexebn die we nog moeten uitwerken.We denken, bijvoorbeeld, aan het opzetten van een opleiding voor jeugdigetrainers, het organiseren van jeugd-clinics.

Bovendien siert het de vereniging, dat zij ook oogheeft voor de jeugd over de grenzen heen. Kinderen, wonend in het noorden vanThailand, die een basis, in de vorm van fatsoenlijk onderwijs, ontberen. Ans isvertegenwoordigster in Nederland van de Thaise x93Foundation for the Education of Rural childrenx94. Een stichting die geldenwerft voor bijzondere onderwijsprojecten in Noord Thailand.

Tijdens het lustrumfeest werd zij in de gelegenheidgesteld een deel van de donaties van het JWF mee te nemen naar de kinderen innood!

FERC Annual Scholarship Day Awards presented to 112Children

Board members and guests of theFoundation for the Education of Rural Children, (FERC), recently travelled tothe Region IV offices of the Department of Education for the annual FERCScholarship Day. An anxious and happy 112 children and their teachers gatheredshortly after 9 a.m. to await their guests and benefactors. After welcoming theguests and children, Region IV officials asked Frank Weicks, ScholarshipChairman, to address the young scholars. Frank, more than happy to oblige,congratulated them on their achievements, and stated that he hoped that theywould study hard, keep themselves healthy, and remember to help others whenthey had completed their education.

Chadurat Kankuem, representing the high school students who receivedscholarship awards, addressed the group in English, thanking them for theirsupport and, continuing, explained her dreams and ambitions. She spoke abouther favourite subjects and her desire to attend university, and stated that sheintends to help other students after she completes her education, just as theFERC scholarship has helped her. Board and committee members and their guestsenjoyed every minute of the giving of the scholarships to each child, andreceived many polite x91waisx92 in return, with some students even taking the opportunityto practice their English language skills by saying x93thank youx94.
At the end of the ceremony, the high school scholarship recipients took fulladvantage of their opportunity to thank FERC by giving representatives of thefoundation token gifts from their homes or villages, including a very cutehome-made pink towelling teddy bear with button eyes given to Norm Robinson!
Eligible students must be recommended by their teachers and pass throughsuccessive screening processes. The final group is interviewed and recommendedby members of the FERC Scholarship Committee, then approved by the Board.Members of this group also monitor the progress of the students during theschool year, visiting the schools and interviewing both students and teachers.

Op initiatief van onze voorzitter, Marc Dumur, heeft FERC steun toegezegd van 50,000 Baht aan het Khun Ta schoolproject in de noordelijke provincie Chiang Rai.

Bijzonder is, dat studenten van de Rajamangala Universiteit (Chiang Rai) het bouwwerk zullen doen. Zij ondersteunen daarmee de lokale arme bevolking in ruil voor onderwijs!

The school operates withinthe confines of an indigenous village called Khun Ta of Hmong people native tothis area of Thailandnear the Laotian boarder. The village isaccessible by a 7 kilometer dirt road with 4×4 vehicle only during the dryseason. It is almost completelyinaccessible during the rainy season by anything other than mule or horse. The school was opened in 1993 and the villagedid not get electricity until 1996. Although the Thai government does provideteachers for the school, there is very little additional support given. Thevillage has a population of 437 people of whom 131 are children (most of whomattend the village school). The village school provides 2 yrs of kindergartenand primary education 1^st to 6^th grades.. A future project might be to see what can be done to support thosechildren that want to continue their education beyond the 6^th gradesince they would need financial support to live outside the village.

Presently there are 3school buildings in the village: 1) one very old building with 3 classroomswhich we would like to replace 2) one new building with 2 classrooms built bythe engineering students in 2007, and3) a building for 20 kindergarten students operated by the local Thaigovernment. The old building is in serious disrepair with many leaks in theroof and because it does not have a proper foundation with good drainage thechildren are often walking around in a couple of inches of water in the rainyseason. THE PARTNERS WOULD LIKE TO BUILD A NEW 3 ROOM SCHOOL BUILDING TOREPLACE THE ONE IN SERIOUS DISREPAIR IN OCTOBER 09. October is the month that the universitystudents get their semester break and have to work on these projects. Marc Dumer on his last visit to the villagepointed out to the other partners that there are only 4 toilets for over 100children attending school here. If we have enough money left beyond what weneed to build the new 3 room school building we would also like to provide theschool with 2 more toilet cabins.

Goed en wel bekomen van de reis naar Thailand (zie beneden) maakten Steve Deering en Cate Kortzeborn zich op voor de "Jewelry Show".

Met de gekochte materialen uit Thailand fabriceren een aantal vrienden, die het als een hobby uitoefenen, prachtige sieraden: halskettingen en armbanden!

Speciaal voor "Thanksgiving Day" en de Kerst werden deze juweeltjes tentoongesteld en verkocht aan vrienden en bekenden. Een 1200 Euro werd aan FERC geschonken! We zijn bijzonder blij met deze vrienden !!

De vrienden van FERC uit Amerika hebben met een tweetal activiteiten de kas van de foundation flink gespekt! Een 8-tal familieleden en vrienden uit San Francisco zijn naar Thailand gekomen, middels een georganiseerde "Charity" Reis. Door de inzet en nodige beschikbare netwerken  van een aantal bestuursleden van FERC kon een 10 daagse trip door Noord-Thailand worden aangeboden. Goede accommodaties, en een gevarieerd excursie-programma, tegenover de vrijmaking van een gedeelte van de betaalde reissom voor FERC (dat is een 3100 Euro!! geworden). De bekende toeristische activiteiten (tempelbezoek met een lezing over boeddhisme, de kookklas, spa en massage)in Chiang Mai; een loep via het berggebied rond Doi Angkhang (koninklijk project), naar de Gouden Driehoek en Chiang Rai, stonden op het programma. Maar evenzo indruwekkend waren ook de bezoekjes van de projecten, waar FERC haar medewerking aan heeft gegeven: Baan Ponsawan, Birmese Children’s Day Centre, DEPDC!! En dat zijn uiteindelijk de "highlights" van deze toer geworden, gezien de reacties van de reizigers!

We cannot thank you enough for making our recent trip to Thailand a memorable and life-changing experience.  Special thanks to Becky, Frank and Marc for thorough and thoughtful trip planning. In addition to sumptuous accommodations (the Tamarind and Legend were beyond description in their levels of comfort and attentive staff) great shopping and spa treatments, we were able to see parts of Northern Thailand that few tourists get to see.  Especially appreciated were the opportunity to visit the area around Doi Ang Khang and the hill tribes by the Hmong Lodge.

Thanks to Ans and Jo for a wonderful Khantoke dinner and entertainment.  Thanks to Dave and friends for the hike which has given Rob stories of a jungle adventure to share with friends.  Thanks to Becky and Frank for their social issues presentation, and a special note of thanks to Frank for taking some of our group to commune with the monkeys.  Thanks to Celeste for joining us on our trek to Chaing Rai and sharing her wealth of knowledge about Thailand.  Thanks to Glynn for meeting us at the airport and sharing his expertise on the scholarship program.

The list goes on and on, and I’m sure I’m forgetting something.  But I have to mention the presentations by Laurie on Buddhism and Khun Sompop on the work of DEPDC as especially enlightening.

Billy Doerner showed us the plight of a disenfranchised hill tribe people caught in the crucible of economic forces they don’t control, and he earned our un-ending respect for the sacrifice he and his family are making to create a safe place for children in need.

The visit to the Burmese day care center was eye opening and sobering. The visit to Tachelike demonstrated a stark contrast between a government that is trying to meet the needs of its populations and one that is not.

I could go on and on about the tour, but the depths of our gratitude cannot be expressed in words.  Know however, that we have returned with a heightened understanding of the good work FERC does and a renewed commitment to seeing its projects succeed.  We look forward to a long lasting and successful collaboration between FERC and your North American friends."

Santisuk School students enjoy their x91After Christmas Partyx92

It may have been the day after Christmas, but that didnx92t matter a bit to the student body of Santisuk School in Region IV School District. Santa Claus, the students and their teachers welcomed FERC board members and visiting magician Nick Wiszynski to a great holiday celebration that combined music, gifts and Nickx92s magic act, along with unexpected rain and miscellaneous dogs wandering in and out of the covered sala. The student body president, Wutthanan Phonyangnork, is also a FERC scholarship recipient. During his speech, Wutthanan said x91This scholarship makes a poor boy be a good student.x92

Santisuk School is a self-sustaining school, a designation given to only two other schools in all of Thailand. Sixty-five percent of the students are tribal children and thirty-five percent are Thai. About half of them live at the school because the distance to their villages is too far for them to travel every day. With their teachers, they grow vegetables, herbs and fruits in their gardens, raise pigs and chickens and care for three fish ponds. The food that is raised and grown is part of the childrenx92s diets, and they are also taught food preparation as well as other life skills. This unusual school is a x91home away from homex92 for 400 students, each of whom has a job to do in preparation for any activity. The school is presently seeking volunteer English language teachers, and can offer room and board for long-term volunteers. FERC board members led the students in stirring renditions of x91Jingle Bellsx92 and x91Frosty the Snowman,x92 then helped to give out gifts to every student and tossed candy treats into the assembly. However, it was magician Nick Wiszynski who captured the imagination and the hearts of the students with his magic show, then sat with small groups to perform magic in a more personal setting. It was easy to tell how fascinated the youngsters were x96 they barely moved during the show, and their x93oohsx94 and x93aahsx94 were evidence of their enchantment.

Met een aantal pick-up trucks vol met schoolmaterialen kon een delegatie bestuursleden van Ferc afreizen:" de bergen in" zoals we dat hier zeggen als we het gebied ten Noorden van Chiang Mai gaan bezoeken. Schoolspullen, aangeschaft van de opbrengsten van de geslaagde jaarlijkse benefietavond! Deze bedroegen ongeveer 6.500 Euro, te besteden aan scholarships voor het nieuwe schooljaar en voor de inrichting van de school in Baan Huay Pa Hon. Er is daar slechts een schoolgebouw, 3 praktisch  lege  klassen, een bevlogen onderwijzerspaar, een solarpaneel, een t.l. lamp en een t.v.!  Het onderwijs is in deze pre-school vooral gericht op de beheersing van de Thaise taal, zodat de kinderen straks naar het reguliere onderwijs kunnen. Het is een Lahu dopsgemeenschap, een van de vele minderheidsgroeperingen in dit land. Andere sociale en medische verbeteringen  worden tevens  aangepakt; de organisatie "The Bridge of Life" gaat deze uitvoeren.

Alle spullen werden uitgestald, terwijl de kinderen en hun ouders in spanning afwachten! De hele bubs op de foto natuurlijk, en van ons werd verwacht de materialen uit te delen; naast schoolboeken, krijtborden, de generator, tafels ook sokjes, slippers en mutsen……….

Blije snoetjes! Zelfs voor de allerkleinsten in de draagdoek bij moeder of oma was er iets. Samen zingen en muziek maken als afsluiting van een prettige middag. De kinderen en hun begeleiders maakten een gezonde en gemotiveerde indruk! Wij keerden via de stoffige weg vanuit het dorp terug naar huis, met een dankwoord aan allen die dit hebben mogelijk gemaakt!

Nederland, fietsland! Zeker waar, als we het vergelijken met Thailand. De bromfiets wordt voor elk wisse wasje gestart. De buurt kent ons, "farang" (buitenlanders, niet cynisch bedoeld) van onze fietstochtjes door de vallei en kleine dorpjes. De blauwe "Gazelle" van Ans wordt vaak bewonderd, en eenmaal stoppend voor een drankje onderweg, reageren de verkopers alsof ze ons al jaren kennen……..Ze bewonderen deze manier van sport bedrijven; hopelijk vindt het navolging in dit land waar evenzo de problemen van de veranderende eetgewoonten opduiken!

Ook de familie in Brabant schuwt een flinke inspanning niet! Corrie en Nico van de Water (Uden) zijn wel een hele speciale sportieve acie gestart. Onder het motto: fietsen is gezond, gezellig en als we ons laten sponsoren steunen we ook het goede doel!

Ze sponsoren zichzelf (!), en laten zich sponsoren door familie, vrienden en bekenden. Wil je met ze meefietsen, dan ben je verzekerd van een mooie tocht, en prettig gezelschap!

Maar het gaat je wel geld kosten!

Inmiddels hebben ze al een flinke 800 km. bij elkaar getrapt – tegen 0,05 ct. per km. -; wat een leuke duit in het zakje voor de foundation betekent! En ze weten nog niet van ophouden, dus schroom niet: fiets mee!

Jarenlang speelden we samen bij volleybalclub Udenhout in de recreatieve kompetitie. Met wisselend succes, maar met enorm veel plezier! Ans vertrok naar Thailand, een aantal zijn gestopt of gaan bridgen, maar nog steeds is er een team actief!  Met zoveel enthousiasme als we altijd speelden, zo ook werd er gereageerd op de uitnodiging voor "de thaise avond". Gebruik makend van deze gelegenheid, en de gastvrijheid van Margret en Thieu van Beijsterveldt (!), stond deze avond in het teken van Thailand en het werk van de foundation. Maar bovenal bedoeld om elkaar weer eens te zien, te lachen en bij te kletsen!

Met hapjes, zoals de "garnalen in groene curry";  gekookte eieren met sojasaus (simpel en net even anders als met peper en zout); rauwe groenten met een chilidip en het exotische "miang kham", een specifiek Noord Thaise snack, werd de tafel gevuld.

Dat laatste gerechtje eiste een demonstratie van Ans: een boomblaadje vouw je tot een puntzakje en vult deze met gedroogde garnaaltjes, stukjes gemberwortel, pinda’s, fijngesneden citroenstukjes, verse chilipeper; overgieten met een speciale zoete saus! A roi!

En op het verzoek om bij het uizoeken van wat souvenirs een extra donatie te doen voor Ferc, werd bijzonder spontaan en reuze sportief gereageerd. Op een team als dit, kun je nog steeds bouwen! Bedankt meiden!
